I’ve been sharing a lot lately about the upcoming TTB wine bond requirement changes. Earlier today I was on their Permits Online website and came across an announcement which shares some info specific to anyone who is now or about to submit an application for a new winery or wine cellar basic permit. (This includes alternating proprietorships!) If like the majority of US wine businesses you’ll sell less than 5,000 cases of wine per year then your TTB application will qualify to select their new data field they’ve added to the application wherein you’ll indicate you expect to owe less than $50,000 in excise taxes in 2017, which will exempt your permit from a wine bond requirement. Also- for any applications that were submitted before this update to the online application but are still not yet approved the TTB will “work with you” to determine if a wine bond is required. For most it will not be so any wine bond materials in your application will be returned to you. See their announcement summary HERE    (scroll to the bottom of the page)
